Second baseman Johnny Giavotella took the relay from Francoeur and threw home

Second baseman Johnny Giavotella took the relay from Francoeur and threw home. Catcher Sal Perez held the ball for the out after absorbing a bone-jarring jolt from Weeks.
That first assist marked the 25th runner thrown out at the plate by the Royals on a play that originated in the outfield. That's the most by any team since Montreal had 30 in 1978.
The two assists also boosted Francoeur's season total to 15, which ranks second in the majors to the club-record 20 by teammate Alex Gordon. Francoeur has 96 assists since his 2005 debut.
Rare start
Mitch Maier played for just the sixth time since July 28 when he started in center field in place of Melky Cabrera. It marked Maier's 17th start of the season and sixth in center field. He has six starts in left field, and five in right field.
Maier went hitless in three at-bats with two strikeouts.
40-20 Club
Francoeur stole his 20th base in Tuesday's 7-4 victory, which extended his career-best total. He never had more than eight in any of his six previous seasons. He also has a career-best 44 doubles, which led the majors through Tuesday's games.
The only other players in franchise history to reach the 40-20 threshold are Johnny Damon (42 doubles, a league-leading 46 steals) in 2000, and Carlos Beltran (44 doubles, 35 steals) in 2002.
Francoeur entered Wednesday as the only player this season to reach 40-20.
Instructional League roster
The Royals released a 79-player roster for the upcoming Instructional League, which runs from Sept. 18 through Oct. 24 at the club's complex in Surprise, Ariz.
The invites include outfielder Bubba Starling and 21 other players selected in the June draft. Outfielder Elier Hernandez and shortstop Adalberto Mondesi, the organization's top two international signings, will also attend.
The 17-game schedule starts Sept. 26 against Cincinnati in Goodyear, Ariz.
